A Pig's Tale: Hog Named Six Seven Granted Clemency by Miami-Dade Mayor.

Although not quite at the equivalent scale as granting clemency to festive fowl, but the county's top official had her own ceremonial pardon event this week by formally pardoning the life of a swine named Six Seven.

Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.

“This animal is guiltless. She is worthy of this pardon. Her criminal record is spotless,” Levine Cava said in a speech with inescapable allusions to the sheer volume of pardons issued from the start of the onset of a new presidential term.

“Unless you count eating half a dozen apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “Let this swine have a prosperous future away from worry.”

The gathering, either celebrating or rejecting the region’s Hispanic tradition of eating roast pork during the holidays, was created to mirror the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.

The animal, contributed by a Coral Gables firefighter, was given its name from the popular vernacular phrase of young people exclaiming “six-seven” – inspired by a hip-hop line – often seemingly at random. The phrase became so pervasive that a prominent word reference recently named “six-seven” its top term for the year.

A Future Secured

Six Seven the pig is now destined to live out its days at a countryside refuge “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the organizers' announcement.

“The annual pig pardon has become a cherished method to begin the end-of-year celebrations,” said the event host, in a particularly upbeat message.

“It represents the character of Miami: vibrant, varied, and based in heritage that bring people together. Annually, we are delighted to mark tradition and kindness in a way only Miami can.”

Guests enjoyed a vegetarian menu of spinach fritters and strong coffee as they marked Six Seven’s big moment.
