Line of Duty Confirmed for 7th Season on the British Broadcaster
The acclaimed crime series AC-12 is officially returning for its 7th season, confirmed by the BBC.
An upcoming six-part season created by the show's creator starts production in Northern Ireland in the coming months, according to the network.
Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the comeback, stating she was "so excited" about the series' return. Her co-star remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together soon."
The previous season concluded in recent years with a finale that attracted over 17 million audience members. Speculation about a new season have been widespread ever since, but official word only arrived this week.
Fresh Obstacles for The Team
The seventh season begins with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and renamed as the new police oversight body, as revealed by production details.
Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain working to combat misconduct within the law enforcement.
The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, these officers will take on their "most delicate case so far."
Fresh Face and Complex Case
An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer celebrated for takedowns of organized crime, is accused of abusing his position to act as a sexual predator.
However, his case could be a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still operating in the background, plot details hinted.
Speaking about the renewal, the creator said: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."
"We're privileged to have had so many fans watch the developments of the unit over multiple series and we are thrilled to be coming back for a seventh installment."
Mercurio continued: "Corruption in this country was thought to be over while the series was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."
Actor Responses
The Scottish actor described being part of the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".
"Beyond the show's success but the people I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."
"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he added.
The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "It goes without saying I'm very happy Line of Duty is back! Eager to work with the creator, Martin and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"
Adrian Dunbar noted: "While anticipating the unit days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming next year."
"Pleased with the news and looking forward to those mercurial twists and turns."
Show History
Line of Duty launched in 2012 and evolved into a highly successful television series of the last decade, featuring guest stars such as Kelly Macdonald.
The BBC has not yet announced when the new season will hit screens.
The conclusion of series six drew the long-running storyline about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and producers indicated at the moment there were no intentions for additional seasons.
However, the network confirmed on Tuesday that a seventh series is now being produced.
