Typically, recap episodes face criticism from viewers as a pointless diversion, or at best viewed as a requirement for series in the age of weekly production. This wasn't always the case, though Avatar: The Last Airbender demonstrated this through "The Ember Island Players," a cherished installment during its concluding run that is now receiving a dedicated Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair drop.

Details about the collector's edition

The full Secret Lair superdrop for the forthcoming Avatar: The Last Airbender collection was revealed earlier this month. Containing five separate collections, and although the one called "My Cabbages!" is clearly funny homage to Avatar's beloved recurring figure, the additional releases seem somewhat less imaginative, with one notable exception: "The Ember Island Players."

Inspired by installment 17 of the third season of the animated show, this Secret Lair features the following cards:

The reason this episode remains memorable

Audiences of Avatar warmly cherish this particular episode, which acted as a summary of the hero Aang and his companions' adventure before the series' finale. Different from standard summary installments, or "clip shows," "The Ember Island Players" was not driven by budget restrictions or scheduling problems. The show's makers genuinely intended to provide audiences an opportunity to reflect on the overall plot, yet they chose to execute it with flair.

During the installment, the heroes observe a theatrical performance inspired by their exploits in a theater on Ember Island, titled The Boy in the Iceberg. The play itself is factually incorrect, over-the-top, and completely amusing. It excels as it plays with the heroes' understanding regarding their own identities, setting them against against how the world (and notably the Fire Nation) views them. It possesses the right amount of introspective humor, and it results in arguably the best adaptation of the show we have had.

Worth and pricing

When it comes to cost-effectiveness, this represents an excellent Secret Lair for one simple reason: Braid of Fire. This card sells between $20 and $40 through card retailers at the time of writing, and for $29.99 you can acquire the complete collection, or for $39.99 for the premium foil treatment.

Magic: The Gathering's Avatar: The Last Airbender collection is available for pre-release events starting November 14 and launches globally come November 21.
