Qatar Sprint Race and Grand Prix Qualifying: Live Updates

Preamble

The author is arriving soon to take you through this day's sprint race (14:00 GMT) and grid-setting session (18:00 GMT).

Current Events

Starting Lap Time

The warm-up lap has started.

Circuit Details

There are 19 laps of the longest circuit in Formula One, David Croft reminds us.

Countdown

The final countdown is underway.

Driver Situation

An advantage in Max Verstappen's favour: his fellow driver Yuki Tsunoda is in front of him by a single position. He is unlikely to interfere with Red Bull's main man.

Media Conversations

Sky's internal discussion currently: Gary Neville is with Mercedes.

The analyst is jumping ahead to 2026, interviewing Adrian Newey about his promotion to Aston Martin team principal.

Starting Positions

Just 16 cars on the grid. This followed another poor grid-setting session for the driver: following his result of 20th and last in the previous race, resulting in an eighth position in the main race, he failed to advance of Q1 once more on the previous day. The team have as a result adjusted to his car configuration and so he will start from the pit lane.

The team's Stroll and the Alpine duo of Gasly and Franco Colapinto are all starting from the same position.

Driver Comments

"We'll use the learning for the next day," states Isack Hadjar, starting eleventh. There will be plenty of learning.

Team Standings

It's not all about the drivers' title: The team have dominated the constructors' gong but Mercedes, with a forty-point advantage over their rivals, will be hoping to secure the runner-up position this weekend. George Russell can help them achieve that from second place, and Kimi Antonelli will begin immediately after the leader.

Past Performance

Oscar Piastri was victorious then – as he did last year, as well. The driver from McLaren is going for a third consecutive win.

Short Race Importance

Alright, approximately twenty minutes to go until the short race begins. Unless something goes wrong, it's greatest value is as a preview of future events, rather than highly important in its own right, with just eight championship points awarded to the victor. Mind you, second place in this race was sufficient for Verstappen to claim the title in a prior season.

The driver wins F1 world title following Pérez crashes out of the short race.
