The Reason Real Madrid Possess 'Total Trust' in Teenager Thiago Pitarch

The young midfielder playing
Thiago Pitarch has played seven matches for the Spanish giants, including five starts.

Whenever a teenage creates club history in a key European match against City, it inevitably draws acclaim and attention.

In only his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth game for the club - the young midfielder made a strong impression as the fifteen-time Champions League winners secured a 3-0 round of 16 first leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also made his club debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then helped Los Blancos overcome the English Premier League side in Tuesday's return to secure a last eight place.

Aged 18 years and 226 days, Pitarch became the team's youngest player to begin two matches in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing star Vinicius Jr's previous mark by a week and a half.

A Meteoric Rise From La Fabrica

The midfielder is the latest to come through from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most exciting protegees.

He signed for Madrid from CD Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe youth teams, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a strong impression.

He progressed to the B team and it was during a pre-season game in which they played against the senior squad, then managed by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have drawn the eye of the present manager, who replaced Xabi Alonso in the new year.

Reports would later label the moment as "love at first sight," noting he stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, personality and drive he brought to the team.

'His Greatest Quality Remains His Personality'

During the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Alonso invited Pitarch to train with the first team and awarded him minutes during the warm-up matches.

Yet, it was the change in manager that became the turning point in his career as he was introduced as a late substitute in each leg against Benfica that set up the meeting with Manchester City.

"I have dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the very first time I started playing football, every day you go to train and each day you have a game," stated the player after his first appearance.

"I have just achieved my dream with the greatest club in the world and in the best competition."

Given a starting debut in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he spent four years after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his place for the next four as injuries to Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opening.

The teenager has seized it with displays that have belied his youth and experience.

"He's a extremely fast footballer, and you can see his capabilities," remarked Arbeloa. "He is extremely energetic, with excellent stamina, work-rate and mobility."

Pitarch's mentality has also impressed his manager.

"His standout trait is his character," continued Arbeloa. "He always wants the ball, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.

"I realize fans might be surprised to watch him start in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had total confidence in him to perform what he usually does.

"He will continue to get chances with the main squad. It's a pleasure to have a player like him."

A Future International Decision

Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and grew up fully immersed in Spanish football, progressing through local academies before joining the club's famous youth academy.

He possesses dual Moroccan and Spanish nationality, offering him the choice to play for both nations at senior international level.

Under international regulations, footballers may represent multiple nations at junior level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only final once they play in a official senior international match.

He has featured for Spain at underage levels, representing both the under-19 and under-20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja made it to the last eight.

Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to any senior national team, who are watching his progress with keen attention.

In a recent interview, the player said: "I haven't made my final decision yet. Things are positive with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a conclusion soon."

This scenario echoes that of other dual nationality players such as club colleague Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. While 18-year-old Yamal opted for Spain, Diaz decided to play for the Atlas Lions.

Focus on the Future

For now, his attention is on establishing himself in the Real side and rewarding Arbeloa's faith.

He played over an hour in the 2-1 victory at City, which sealed a 5-1 aggregate success and a quarter-final tie with Bayern Munich.

His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel to emphasise Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to aid the team pursue future success.

Following his impressive impact to date on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is tipped to be a central figure in that.

"Arbeloa treats me the identical way. We deal with it very normally. I try not to think about it too much - I have to deserve my playing time on the pitch," he said following the win at Etihad Stadium.
