The Red Devils Poised to Secure German Striker Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are finalising sealing the deal for prolific German forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Acquisition for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has six months left on her contract, has been a consistent goalscorer for her club and the national team. She has netted over 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. This signing will be seen as a marquee signing for the Women’s Super League side.
Her exit from Munich was expected since she was seen fighting back tears while thanking the club's fans following a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its top strikers. According to multiple sources, the formalities for the move have now been completed.
Reliable Goalscoring to Boost United's Forward Line
The experienced striker's arrival should represent a significant uplift to United’s attacking options. She has been highly reliable with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
- For seven straight seasons, including the last term, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She claimed the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Building Steam at Carrington
The acquisition of Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when United appear to be building positive momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes include securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the winter break has brought further business:
- The acquisition of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The new deal for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
Regarding the midfielder's extension, a senior figure commented: “Miyazawa is now a vital component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill allows her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having joined from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
